Your effective rate is the single most useful number for understanding your true processing cost. It combines every fee — transaction fees, monthly fees, and all other charges — into one comparable percentage of your total card sales.

The Formula
Your statement may label this as gross sales, processed volume, card sales, or something similar.
Example: Month-End Statement
Effective Rate Calculation
$579.95 ÷ $25,000 × 100 = 2.32%
This is the all-in effective rate, including all monthly fees amortized over the month's volume.
Include all fees for an accurate comparison
If you only include transaction fees, you'll understate your actual cost — especially if you have significant fixed monthly charges (PCI fee, gateway fee, monthly minimum, etc.). For a fair comparison between processors, include all fees in both calculations.
One-time fees can distort your effective rate if included in a single month's calculation.
Benchmark month-over-month
Calculate your effective rate each month and track it. Unexplained increases in effective rate can indicate new fees, card mix shifts, or downgrade issues.
Compare processors fairly
When getting quotes from multiple processors, ask each for a fee schedule and calculate the estimated effective rate on your typical volume and card mix. A lower advertised rate doesn't always mean lower effective rate when all fees are included.
Verify your pricing agreement
If your effective rate is significantly higher than what you were quoted, review your statement line-by-line for unexpected fees or downgrade charges.
Use the Cost Calculator
ProcessorFit's Cost Calculator lets you input your monthly volume, average ticket, and card mix to estimate effective rates across different pricing models.
